The Queen's New Court
How you doin’? Closeted stars may never be safe, but radio shock jock Wendy Williams is doin’ just fine as she brings her “messy” talk show to daytime TV.
By Brandon Voss An Advocate.com exclusive posted July 13, 2009
A radio personality for 20 years, a recent nominee for induction to the National Radio Hall of Fame, and host of the top-rated syndicated radio show The Wendy Williams Experience, New York Times best-selling author Wendy Williams welcomes a whole new experience as host of her own daytime television talk show. Following a successful six-week trial run last summer, The Wendy Williams Show returns in national syndication July 13. The envelope-pushing, self-proclaimed “Queen of All Media” (who shares executive-producer credit with husband Kevin Hunter and out Emmy-winner Rob Dauber) promises the same no-holds-barred style that got her name dropped in Mariah Carey’s hit single “Touch My Body” last year (“’cause they be all up in my business like a Wendy interview”). Willing to reveal the woman beneath the wigs, Williams let Advocate.com get all up in her infamous feuds and controversial reputation for outing celebrities.
Advocate.com: A-list celebrities and their publicists can sometimes be intimidating. Can you share some tips on how to be a fearless interviewer like you? Wendy Williams: Just ask your questions in a way that’s not mean-spirited, but always be prepared to accept the answer “No comment.” But you’re a journalist, so you must be a little relentless and give it one more try but position the question in a different way. If it’s still “no comment,” take that for what it is and keep walking. Because if you push, your subject is going to become upset and recoil.
Should celebrities be nervous when they come on your show? No. Whenever I hear that people are scared or intimidated by me, I just find that so funny. I’m actually very nice and quite a lovely woman. I’m very pink, if I can describe myself as a color. I just happen to be a very curious woman. I was a very curious child, and sometimes I was inappropriate with my questions and comments. Turns out that I’m the same as an adult, except now I know how to be a bit more appropriate. I’ve also learned how to take no for an answer. Celebrities should be excited to come on and promote their projects because I have one of the most relevant, vibrant, consumer-conscious, hip, and alive audiences on the face of the planet. My following is amazing. You show me a 75-year-old woman who watches The Wendy Williams Show and I’ll show you the liveliest one in her group.
Does anyone intimidate you? No. Not now that I have my own court.
You’ve described your show as “messy.” For those who don’t speak Wendy, what does that mean? “Messy” is actually a wonderful compliment if you’re not an anal-retentive personality. It means there’s always something askew or there’s always a hair or 10 out of place. It’s fabulous, but there’s always that one thing that makes you say, “What the f?” Like a beautiful outfit with a visible panty line. That makes us human. We’re all messy in our own way.
How will your daytime chat show compare to Oprah Winfrey’s and Tyra Banks’s shows? We’re all black, we all have beautiful smiles, we all battle our weight, and we’re all big women -- though I’m a little bigger than Tyra. And Tyra and I wear the same color wigs. Otherwise, there really isn’t much of a comparison. I love Tyra, but it’s generally a one-topic show, and my show consists of hot topics, advice, and one-on-one celebrity interviews. And Oprah has turned more informational first and then entertainment second. Last time I turned on Oprah, I got some really great information about self-body-checks.
Have you heard from Tyra or Oprah regarding your new show? Tyra sent me a beautiful bouquet of flowers. The note was really sweet and thoughtful, but it was very short; it said something about “congratulations.” I appreciated hearing from her. I haven’t heard from Oprah; I don’t even know if Oprah knows who I am, to be honest with you. But I have heard from Gayle! During the six weeks [sneak preview], I wore a Roberto Cavalli dress that Gayle really liked, so she called my outfit people at the studio to ask, “What was Wendy wearing?” ( Read more... )

Jennifer Aniston keeps close and places her hand on co-star Gerard Butler off the set of their new film The Bounty in New York on Friday (July 10). The 40-year-old actress seemed to clutch onto Gerard in the same way she hung onto former husband, Brad Pitt, in 2005! Looks like Jen and Gerard are getting awfully close filming this movie together. We’ll see where this goes! ( More here )

Aww, they look adorable, although I would kill small animals to be in her place. Regis and Kelly showed this picture today on their show and said they were gonna grill Gerry about it when he was on the show. Wonder what he'll say!

| Toronto Film Festival Announces Opening Lineup |
[07|14|09 1:59pm] |
Toronto Film Festival breaks with tradition to select British film "Creation" to open the Gala, the first time a non-Canadian film was selected...

"The world premiere of Creation, a drama about evolution theorist Charles Darwin starring married actors Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly, has nabbed the opening night slot at this year's Toronto International Film Festival.Organizers announced their selection of the British film on Tuesday morning, as well as 22 more additions to its gala and special presentations lineups. "We have traditionally opened with a Canadian film, but this year we chose to go a different route. We fell in love with this movie and this is the one, we felt, really sets the tone for the kinds of conversations we hope will happen around the films at the festival," TIFF co-director Cameron Bailey told reporters on Tuesday.
He added that the "tension between faith and reason" seen in Creation — which follows Darwin as he struggles with the views of his deeply religious wife and his world-changing theories — is also emerging in other films programmers have selected.
"This theme of that eternal conflict between faith and reason does seem to be emerging from different parts of the world, in different kinds of films: documentaries, fiction films, big films, small films," Bailey said As well, 18 new and recent titles — from noted filmmakers like Jane Campion, Steven Soderbergh and Johnnie To and featuring actors such as Clive Owen, Eva Green, Matt Damon, Edward Norton and Kristin Scott Thomas — were also added to the TIFF 2009 schedule as special presentations.
- The Boys are Back, Scott Hicks (Australia/U.K.).
- Bright Star, Jane Campion (U.K./Australia).
- City of Life and Death, Lu Chuan (China).
- Cracks, Jordan Scott (Ireland).
- Hadewijch, Bruno Dumont (France).
- The Informant, Steven Soderbergh (U.S.).
- The Invention of Lying, Ricky Gervais and Matthew Robinson (U.S.).
- Leaves of Grass, Tim Blake Nelson (U.S.).
- London River, Rachid Bouchareb (U.K./France/Algeria).
- Mao's Last Dance, Bruce Beresford (Australia/U.S./China).
- Moloch Tropical, Raoul Peck (Haiti/France).
- Mother, Bong Joon-ho (South Korea).
- Ondine, Neil Jordan (Ireland/U.S.).

Further titles will be announced in the coming weeks, including this year's full Canadian lineup in August."

| Rowe has NOT taken $4 mil for the kids |
[07|14|09 1:44pm] |
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- No deal has been reached between Michael Jackson's mother and his ex-wife over the custody of the late singer's children, according to a lawyer in the case.
Debbie Rowe is scheduled to attend a child custody hearing on Monday.
Eric George, who represents Debbie Rowe, the biological mother of Jackson's two oldest children, said a newspaper report that Rowe had agreed to take $4 million not to challenge Katherine Jackson for custody was "completely false."
Jackson's lawyer did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday.
The Jackson family lawyer said last week that they were working to "privately and amicably resolve" the matter.
A child custody court hearing, which had been set for this week, was delayed until next Monday at the request of lawyers for Jackson and Rowe, a court official said.
Katherine Jackson gained temporary guardianship of the children soon after her son's death last month.
Rowe's lawyer said two weeks ago that "Debbie has not reached a final decision concerning the pending custody proceedings."
The New York Post, quoting an unidentified Jackson family source, reported Rowe had agreed to drop any custody challenge for a $4 million payment.

At 18, washed out of college in West Virginia and ended up in South Beach. Worked in construction and as a perfume spritzer at Dillard’s. Walked into a modeling agency and got a job with Abercrombie. Went to Hollywood. Stayed handsome. Launched a bunch of roles—two, oddly, with the name of “Duke.” Is now being called the next big thing. Is not complaining
